Winter can often be a sense of dreariness with its grey skies and darker days. But did you know that incorporating colour theory into your outfits can help boost your mood during the colder moths? Understanding the basics of colour theory can help you create outfits that not only look great but also make you feel great.

We asked style guru Alexandra from @alexandra.e.style to share how she uses colour when building outfits.

Colour Theory 101

Colour theory is based on the idea that colours have a psychological impact on us. Warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are said to evoke feelings of warmth, energy and excitement. On the other hand, colours such as blue, green and purple are believed to be calming, relaxing and tranquil.

Alexandra from @alexandra.e.style uses colour theory to elevate her outfits and create what is often called “dopamine dressing”. She’s put together a couple of eye-catching outfits from Bankstown Central to inspire you to mix and match with colour and help you feel and look great all winter long.

Outfit One: Confidence courtesy of complementary colours

Pink and green might seem like an unexpected colour combination, but when paired together, they create a winning and harmonious look. These colours are complementary both in the colour spectrum but also in energy as it’s pairing one warm tone with a cool tone - creating both a sense of balance and contrast. Here, Alexandra offsets the pops of colour with a neutral pant which allows the colour to contrast and shine.

Starting with key pieces such as a blue top from Sheike, a blue jacket from Forever New, or even a pink bag from Colette, you can start adding some colour into you winter wardrobe.

Outfit two: Using colour to make a statement

When it comes to incorporating colour theory into your wardrobe, you might think that you need to revamp your entire closet with new and colourful pieces. However, that’s not necessarily the case. You can start small by choosing one statement piece that incorporated a bold, bright colour.

Choosing a statement coat in a cheerful hue can instantly list your mood. Hot pink is exciting and energising and when paired with neutral pieces such as a white top and navy pant, it creates a balanced look that allows the colour to stand out.

You could also inject some colour with green pants from Forever New, a blue top from Cotton On, or even some purple pumps from Billini - all essentials for starving off those winter blues.

So, what are you waiting for? Incorporate some colour into your winter wardrobe at Bankstown Central to mix and match your favourite colours and transform the winter blues with happy hues.

Looks like winter won’t be so dark and dreary after all.
